Muscles of The Face

The facial muscles are just under the skins subcutaneous muscle they control facial expressions.

They generally originate from the surface of the skull bone (rarely the facia) and insert on the skin of the face.

An understanding of the forehead, eyebrow and eyelid anatomy is essential when doing any facial beauty treatments, as these separate units inter-relate with each other, making it critical to understand where these muscles are situated as well as their functions to perform any successful treatment because they will affect the way in which you prepare for different treatments.

Eyebrow position is achieved by a balance of muscles which surround the brow and eye area – Frontalis, Temporalis, Orbicularis oculi, Corrugator supercilia and Procerus in order to achieve symmetry.

Lip position is achieved b a balance of muscles which surround the mouth area – Orbicularis oris, Buccinator, Risorius, Depressor Labii inferioris and Depressor anguli oris

Cheek position is achieved by a balance of muscles on each side of the face – Zygomaticus,Masseter, Levator labii superioris and Platysma.
