When a client has a reaction to a product, they will often blame the product for causing their reaction. It is their body that has had the reaction to an ingredient. No reaction to patch testing DOES NOT mean that the client will still not react. The body can develop a sensitivity or allergy over time an even be sensitive to other ingredients in the product.
In some cases, things can be unavoidable but you can take steps to minimise this but you cannot prevent them.
- Allergies to tint and other products
- Minor skin grazes and treading cuts
- Minor skin burns
- Inflamed follicles
Hair colourants contain an ingredient called PPD, some people can be allergic or sensitive to PPD. Even though you would’ve patch tested it is not 100% guaranteed they will be allergy free.
If your client experiences any sings of allergic reaction:
Remove tint or perming solution and soothe the area with cold water and remove all the products, explain it is their body that has reacted to the tint or product.
ADVISE – your client to visit a pharmacist
They will normally recommend antihistamines and an anti-inflammatory cream such as hydrocortisone.
Do not dispense creams or medication yourself, always direct clients to a pharmacist for any medication.
UPDATE their record card so this can be referred to if they return for the treatment.
